How to Calculate Your Grade

Your grade is calculated based on the points earned divided by total possible points, often with different weights for different assignments. The basic formula is: Grade% = (Points Earned / Total Points) × 100. If you earned 85 points out of 100 possible, your grade is 85%.

When assignments have different weights, the calculation becomes: Weighted Grade = Σ(Assignment Grade × Weight) / Σ(Weights). For example, if homework is 30% of your grade and you have 90%, while exams are 70% and you have 80%, your grade is (90 × 0.30) + (80 × 0.70) = 27 + 56 = 83%.

Understanding grade calculations helps you strategize. If a final exam is worth 40% of your grade, it has more impact than several homework assignments combined. Calculate what score you need on remaining assignments to achieve your target grade. This calculator helps you plan your study efforts effectively.

GPA Scales and Grade Conversion

Grade Point Average (GPA) converts letter grades to a numerical scale, typically 0-4.0. The standard conversion is: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. Plus and minus grades adjust by 0.3 (A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, etc.). Some schools use different scales or don't use plus/minus.

To calculate GPA: multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, sum all these products, then divide by total credit hours. If you earned an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course: (4.0 × 3 + 3.0 × 4) / (3 + 4) = (12 + 12) / 7 = 3.43 GPA.

International grading systems vary significantly. The UK uses classifications (First, 2:1, 2:2, Third). Germany uses 1-5 (lower is better). Many countries use percentages differently. When applying to international programs, check conversion standards as they aren't always straightforward one-to-one mappings.

Understanding Weighted Grades

Weighted grades give different categories of assignments different levels of importance. Common weighting schemes include: Homework/Participation (10-20%), Quizzes (10-15%), Midterms (20-30%), Final Exam (25-40%). The exact weights are determined by your instructor and listed in the syllabus.

To calculate your current grade in a weighted system, calculate your average in each category, multiply by the weight, and sum. If you have 95% homework (weighted 20%), 88% quizzes (15%), and 82% on the midterm (30%), your grade so far is: (95 × 0.20) + (88 × 0.15) + (82 × 0.30) = 19 + 13.2 + 24.6 = 56.8 out of 65% of the course completed, or 87.4%.

Some schools use weighted GPAs that give extra points for honors, AP, or IB courses (typically 0.5-1.0 extra points). This means an A in an AP class might count as 5.0 instead of 4.0. Weighted GPAs can exceed 4.0 and are used mainly for class rank calculations.
