25%+Exceptional service, fine dining, or a meaningful thank-you to your server.

Tipping Around the World

United States & Canada: 15–20% expected. Servers earn as little as $2.13/hr and rely on tips for most of their income.

United Kingdom: 10–12% is appreciated; a service charge is often already included — check your bill first.

Continental Europe: Rounding up or leaving 5–10% is courteous. Tipping is welcomed but not obligatory.

Japan: Tipping is not customary and can be considered rude. Exceptional service is its own reward.

Australia: Not expected, but a 10% tip for outstanding service is always welcome.

How to Calculate Tips

Calculating a tip is straightforward: multiply the bill amount by the tip percentage. The formula is: Tip Amount = Bill × (Tip% / 100). For example, a 20% tip on a $50 bill is $50 × 0.20 = $10, making the total $60.

For quick mental math, find 10% by moving the decimal point one place left, then adjust. On a $47 bill, 10% is $4.70. For 20%, double it to $9.40. For 15%, add half of 10% ($2.35) to get $7.05. This method works for any bill amount without needing a calculator.

Tipping customs vary by country. In the United States, tipping is expected and often constitutes a significant portion of service workers' income. In many European countries, service charges are included in prices, and additional tipping is optional. In some Asian countries, tipping may even be considered rude. Always research local customs when traveling.

Tipping Etiquette by Service Type

Different services have different tipping norms. At restaurants, 15-20% is standard for good service, with 25% or more for exceptional experiences. For takeout, tipping was traditionally optional but has become more common, typically 10-15%.

For delivery services, $3-5 or 15-20% of the order is appropriate, with more for large orders or difficult conditions like bad weather or apartment buildings without elevators. Rideshare drivers typically receive 15-20% tips, similar to taxi drivers.

Personal services like haircuts, spa treatments, and massages typically warrant 15-20% tips. Hotel housekeeping should receive $2-5 per night, left daily rather than at checkout since different staff may clean each day. Valet parking attendants typically receive $2-5 when your car is returned.

Splitting Bills and Tips Fairly

When dining with a group, there are several ways to handle the bill and tip. The simplest method is dividing everything equally, which works well when everyone ordered similarly priced items. The formula is: Each Person Pays = (Bill + Tip) / Number of People.

For more precise splitting, calculate each person's share based on what they ordered. Add the tip proportionally to each person's subtotal. If one person's food cost $30 of a $100 bill, they pay 30% of the total including tip.

Many restaurants automatically add gratuity for large parties, typically 18-20%. Check your bill to avoid double-tipping. When using apps or cards to split payment, ensure the tip is calculated on the pre-tax total for accuracy. Use this calculator to quickly determine fair splits for any group size.
